The 2025 Summer School of Mathematics for Economic and Social Sciences has come to an end: a week of advanced mathematics and interdisciplinarity

The course, which focused on stochastic processes and mean-field games, was organized by the Institute of Economics of the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies and the Ennio De Giorgi Center of the Scuola Normale Superiore, with the support of the MERITA network

The 2025 edition of the Summer School of Mathematics for Economic and Social Sciences, an event that for years has aimed to strengthen the dialogue between mathematics and social sciences, has come to an end at the Conservatory of Santa Chiara in San Miniato (Pisa). For a week, the historic classrooms of the Conservatory welcomed selected students from Italian and foreign universities, with backgrounds ranging from economics to finance, biology to physics, engineering to pure mathematics.

This plurality of perspectives gave rise to an intensely interdisciplinary context, in which different methods and languages intertwined. The course format—which alternated between lectures, practical exercises, and group discussions—made it possible to translate into concrete experience the goal of exploring techniques that, although widely used, are not adequately covered in typical degree programs.

This edition saw the participation of Daria Ghilli (University of Pavia) and Enrico Scalas (La Sapienza University, Rome), who addressed combinatorial stochastic processes and mean-field games, respectively. The coexistence of students and teachers within the Conservatory fostered not only intensive study, but also the building of relationships, informal exchanges, and new possible research collaborations.

The Summer School is organized by the Ennio De Giorgi Mathematics Research Center (Scuola Normale Superiore), with the support of the International Doctorate in Economics at the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna. It also benefited from funding from the MERITA project, the network for talent, as part of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).
